This is a collection of commonly used words that are often used when teaching, performing or executing gymnastic drills and skills.

Description

Video

Adolph (Ady)

A single front somersault with three and a half twists.

Arabian Double Front

An Arabian front but consisting of two somersaults.  

Arabian Front

A type of somersault skill which is executed from a back tumbling skill, consisting of a ½ turn into a front salto.   

Back Flip

A backwards somersault in the air performed in either the tuck, pike or layout position.   

Back Walkover

A control skill where a gymnast starts in the standing position, arches themselves into a backbend and kicks their legs over their head to land on her feet in a step-out landing (one leg followed by the other).   

Back Handspring (Flip-Flop, Flic-Flac)

This is a common skill where the gymnast takes off from one or two feet, jumps backwards onto their hands, and lands on her feet.   

Barani

A forward somersault with a half twist performed in the beginning of the layout position. Named after Italian circus acrobat and tumbler Alfonso Barani who “invented” the front salto with ½ twist around 1881.   

Cartwheel

A sideways rotation requiring the gymnast to place the hands and feet alternately on the ground, like the spokes of a turning wheel.   

Double Back

A backwards somersault with two rotations.   

Double-Double

A double somersault with two full twists. The term “Double-Double” doesn’t describe at what position the twists are performed.

Double Full (Double Twist)

A tumbling skill followed by a single layout salto followed by two twists.   

Double Lay (Double Layout)

A double back salto executed in the layout position.   

Forward Somersault (Forward Salto)

A forward rotating somersault.   

Full

A forward or backwards somersault with a full twist.  

Full-Full (Full-In, Full-Out)

A double rotating somersault with 1 full twist in the first somersault and 1 full twist in the last somersault.   

Full-In (Full-In-Back-Out)

A double backwards salto with a full twist in the first salto rotation.   

Full-Out (Back-In-Full-Out)

A double backwards salto with a full twist in the last salto rotation.

Half-Half (Half-In, Half-Out)

A double somersault with a ½ twist in the first somersault and a ½ twist in the last somersault.   

Handstand

A way of demonstrating control, requiring the gymnast to stand on their hands and, keeping their legs and body straight, extend their legs vertically into the air.   

Layout

A somersault with the body in a tight and straight position.   

Miller

A double somersault with 3 full twists. A miller can be executed in many different ways:

  • 2½ in, barani out
  • full in, double full out
  • 1½ in, 1½ out

 

 

Pike

A body position requiring the gymnast to bend their body forwards at the waist keeping their legs straight.   

Puck

A somersault were the gymnast isn’t in a tuck or a layout position, but somewhere in between.   

Punch

A somersault executed from the rebound of the last skill and for the most part in the reverse direction. A series containing a punch skill could be: rondat, back handspring, salto, punch (The punch would be a forward somersault in this serie).  

Randolph (Randy)

A forward somersault with 2½ twists.   

Round-Off (Rondat)

A common gymnastic movement that leads into many more difficult skills. It is performed by pushing off one leg, swinging legs quickly in a cartwheel motion and landing on two feet. It is usually the initial skill in a tumbling pass.   

Rudolph (Rudy)

A forward somersault with 1½ twists.   

Somersault (Salto)

An acrobatic movement where the body makes a complete aerial turn (360 degrees) in the transversal axis. Can be done forward, backward and sideward.   

Triple Back

A somersault with 3 backwards somersaults.   

Tuck

A gymnastics body position where the knees and hips are bent and drawn into the chest with the hands holding the knees. This body position is used in somersaults to rotate faster. Variation on the tuck position include the open tuck and cowboy tuck positions.   

Whip Back

A backwards somersault similar to a handspring but without the hands making contact with floor.
